Water scarcity is already reshaping agriculture in many of the world’s most productive growing regions. Mediterranean Europe, the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, large parts of South and Central America, and the western United States are all experiencing more frequent and more severe drought conditions.
For growers of high-value crops, the challenge is compounded. Fruits, vegetables, grapes and tree nuts are among the most sensitive to water deficit. A grower who reduces irrigation by 25% may lose 40% or more of marketable yield if that reduction falls at the wrong growth stage.
Addressing this effectively requires more than improved irrigation scheduling. It requires tools that work at the plant level to make crops genuinely more efficient in how they use available water. That is what ISKAMAR® with PSI® 433 Precision Technology delivers.
Understanding Drought Stress at the Plant Level
How soil moisture deficit triggers a cascade of damage
Drought stress begins at the root zone. As soil moisture declines, the energy required for roots to extract water increases. Long before permanent wilting occurs, the crop is already responding in ways that cut yield potential.
Stomata close to limit transpiration, which simultaneously restricts CO2 entry and slows photosynthesis. Cell expansion slows. In fruit crops, the most vulnerable responses affect flowering, pollination and fruit development. Water deficit at these stages causes flower abortion, poor fruit set and premature ripening.
Relative water content as a predictor of yield retention
Relative water content (RWC) is a reliable indicator of how well a crop is managing water stress. Research consistently shows that crops maintaining higher RWC under deficit conditions retain more yield potential. Improving RWC under stress is one of the core mechanisms through which ISKAMAR® protects yield.
ISKAMAR®’s Targeted Approach to Drought Tolerance
A precision formulation engineered for water use efficiency
ISKAMAR® contains marine carbohydrates derived from chitosan, enriched with calcium and organic acids. It was developed through Brandon Bioscience’s PSI® Precision Technology platform, which fine-tunes the bioactivity of the extract to target water use efficiency mechanisms specifically.
The result is a product with a precise, well-characterised mode of action. Every batch is validated chemically, biologically and functionally before it leaves the facility.
Smarter stomatal control under stress
The core mechanism is optimised stomatal regulation. ISKAMAR® allows the crop to manage transpiration water loss more efficiently without shutting down photosynthesis as sharply. This improves the amount of carbon fixed per unit of water transpired, which is the fundamental definition of water use efficiency.
Building resilience across multiple stress pathways
ISKAMAR® also improves carbohydrate and calcium transport within water-stressed tissue. This maintains cell wall integrity and turgor pressure, supporting continued growth even as soil moisture falls.
The product stimulates defence proteins and secondary metabolites that build broader stress tolerance. This protects the crop not just from water deficit but from the heat stress and nutrient disruption that often accompany it.
Proactive priming, not reactive rescue
ISKAMAR® performs in both stressed and unstressed conditions. Applied ahead of anticipated drought stress, it primes the plant’s tolerance systems before they are needed. This proactive approach delivers better protection than waiting for symptoms to appear.
Field Evidence: Real Results Under Real Drought
Potato trial: 16.1% more marketable yield
In a potato trial conducted during a severe agricultural drought season, ISKAMAR® treated plants maintained higher relative water content at every measurement point throughout mid-season.
At harvest, treated plots produced 16.1% more marketable yield than untreated controls. Same soil. Same weather. Same irrigation programme. The only difference was ISKAMAR®.
15.4% average improvement across diverse crops
Across tree fruits, tree nuts, soft fruits, vegetables and grapes, and across multiple growing regions, ISKAMAR® delivers an average yield benefit of 15.4% in stressed conditions. That consistency across crops and climates is what makes the product commercially reliable.
Three peer-reviewed publications validate the mechanisms and outcomes: Vasilieva et al. (2021) in the Journal of Processes, Busswinkel et al. (2018) in the Journal of Biological Macromolecules, and Goni et al. (2016) in the Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
Practical Application in Drought-Prone Production Systems
Application protocols for point stress and deficit irrigation
For point water stress events, apply 2 to 4 litres per hectare before the onset of anticipated stress, then 1 litre per hectare every 14 days during the stress period, up to a maximum of 4 litres per hectare.
For structured deficit irrigation at 40 to 75% of recommended volumes, apply three applications of 3 litres per hectare at the vegetative phase, flowering and fruit set or fattening.
Straightforward logistics at farm scale
ISKAMAR® is available in 5-litre and 10-litre containers. Its high-concentration formulation keeps the volume applied per hectare low, minimising logistics costs. The product fits conventional and organic programmes without any special handling requirements.
Biostimulants as Drought Resilience Tools
An immediately deployable solution
Improving irrigation infrastructure, adopting precision technologies and developing drought-tolerant varieties all have important roles to play. But these approaches take time and capital to implement. ISKAMAR® can be deployed within the current growing season and start delivering results immediately.
Science that stands on its own
ISKAMAR® is backed by three peer-reviewed publications and a consistent 15.4% yield improvement in stressed conditions across a diverse trial portfolio. Brandon Bioscience’s commitment to ongoing research ensures that the evidence base continues to grow.
